Our Story
Meals on Wheels South Africa was started in 1964 by the late Dr Dennis Baird a founder member of the Sandton Meals on Wheels. It began in East London (South Africa) where he recognised the need in the ageing community. The Sandton branch was started in February 1986 with Trudy Chapman as the cook and a team of volunteers tirelessly collecting and preparing food and delivering meals in response to the need to care for the aged and vulnerable. Today our branch has one staff member and a team of volunteers to run the feeding programs and food parcel program as well as ad hoc projects, as and when the resources allow. Our volunteers and partners empower us to do more and so we strive to increase our donor base and partner with businesses to make a real difference in the community.

Meals on Wheels is a faith based not for profit organisation (NPO) whose aim is to give with dignity. We care about and for our reciepients and our team and volunteers go beyond the call of duty to help and uplift others. As we reach out to the vulnerable in our community our focus is not only to alleviate their physical needs but also to bring hope.

A Letter from the Board
Dear Reader,
Sandton Meals on Wheels branch like most non-profit organisations in South Africa has felt the after-effects of covid-19 and more recent economic crises in several ways, for us the most significant being food and fuel prices. In the lives of our communities, we have seen the increase in joblessness and homelessness that has left many in financial duress facing increasing challenges and feeling helpless and hopeless.
Our organisation has particularly felt the drop in contributions and support from our donors towards our projects and programs and find ourselves having to do more with less. As the country starts to open up allowing for more economic activity we hope and trust that things will improve.
We are glad to welcome three new members to our committee to assist with administration, operations and fundraising. We believe that filling these positions will go a long way to helping us do more than we have been able to in the past.
As our burden increases we trust our resources will increase and hope that you as the reader can help us in our fundraising efforts or in sourcing foodstuffs and other necessities for our food parcel program. Should you, your organisation or employer be in a position to donate at all towards our programs and projects in any way, please let us know through the donor form and we will be in contact. If you can refer us to potential donors please do so.
Fresh produce is an important component of delivering nutritious meals and we would like to start our own vegetable garden to help us in this quest. If you are willing and able to assist with this project in any way please let us know.
We want to take this opportunity to thank our donors many of whom are private individuals who have continued with their self sacrificing contributions despite a drop in income. Thank you also to our volunteers who despite restrictions and protocols have still assisted us in reaching the elderly and vulnerable with food and aid. Our thanks goes to the driver who collects and delivers, the cooks who prep the food and keep watch over the pots, the volunteers who cut and chop, wash and mop and help to get the job done. We appreciate you and your commitment. Then last but most importantly we thank God who has carried us through these challenging times and continues to give us the health and strength and resources to labour in love for our fellow man.
